As a Lithium-Ion Cell Engineer, you will play a critical role in driving key engineering decisions, collaborating with internal and external teams, and pushing and qualifying new cell designs from concept to mass production. RESPONSIBILITIES Drive key engineering decisions with Tesla teams and external cell manufacturers to push and qualify new cell designs from concept to mass production Collaborate with internal design teams globally and test team to define cell electrochemical, mechanical, and safety performance requirements, and generate qualification plan Negotiate requirements and final product specification with cell manufacturers Define qualification plans to validate new cell designs and execute at both internal test team and cell manufacturers Root cause new failure modes and fine-tune design Synthesize qualification status into program level impacts and report regularly to Tesla leadership
TEAM The Cell Quality team is part of Cell Manufacturing team within the R&D organization. The group supports development of new mass production cell candidates by guiding design decisions, contributing to cell supplier specification requirements, and collaborating on cell material and process development projects. Cell Quality leads mass production cell projects that impact incoming cell quality, Tesla manufacturability, and field reliability. THE ROLE The Gigafactory Cell Quality team is seeking a mid-senior level engineer to lead and support incoming quality inspection, root cause analysis, critical Li-ion cell component analysis, and data analysis in both manufacturing and lab environments. The majority of projects will be multidisciplinary and focused on field reliability and safety, production throughput, and cost savings of Li-ion cells. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to effectively interface with employees throughout the company ranging from production associates to executives within Tesla and with suppliers. Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills are necessary to excel in this role. The person for this position must exhibit the knowledge, leadership, and drive needed to not only challenge the status quo, but also define and execute the optimal path forward. Responsibilities Lead regular Model 3 and Tesla Energy cell quality operations at Gigafactory 3, including: Participate in audits of Tesla and supplier manufacturing lines to ensure all processes follow the plan of record. Complete incoming quality control tasks to ensure manufacturing capability and product reliability. Manage non-conforming cell process flows and evaluate suspect materials while working closely with internal and external teams to quickly identify and resolve any cell-related issues. Lead the identification, root cause analysis, CAPA, and resolution of cell related manufacturing quality issues. Lead cell’s field analysis case. Contain and sort products as needed based on quality requirements. Drive cross functional projects with manufacturing, supply chain, production quality, and design/research teams to test existing and determine new product specifications and tolerances. Collaborate with suppliers to initiate and implement Process Change Requests (PCRs) to improve manufacturability and field performance. Seek out and initiate continuous improvement projects within Tesla manufacturing and at suppliers. Lead FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks mitigated. Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to engineering as well as participate in DFM reviews. Produce cogent and intelligible data visualizations. Author presentations and summarize high-impact technical findings. Develop custom test methods to solve critical cell engineering issues. Anticipate potential problems and take preventative action.
THE ROLE: As a cell test engineer, you will join a core technology team tasked with developing cutting edge techniques for investigating the physical and chemical degradation mechanisms in all cell chemistries used in Tesla products. This engineer’s primary role will be to develop and execute targeted test plans that evaluate and qualify novel cell designs from Tesla’s cell vendors. The ideal candidate will exhibit outstanding attention to detail, possess strong organization skills, and be motivated to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. RESPONSIBILITIES: Execution and maintenance of lithium ion cell performance tests using common cell cycling equipment, temperature/humidity chambers and recirculating chillers. Write test plans, propose design of experiments and summarize results in test reports. Use test data to optimize cell lifetime by specifying system level usage parameters such as charge algorithms, storage temperatures, cycle temperatures, etc. Coordinate cell level destructive physical analysis and other analytical techniques to analyze mechanisms of energy and power loss in cells. Be a member of a cross functional product development team to help determine the ideal cell chemistry and design for Tesla’s applications.
Description Data Engineer, Cell Quality & Field Reliability The Team The Cell Quality team is a small team within the R&D organization responsible for incoming, production and field reliability. The group projects focus on mass production of Li-ion cells for all programs, including Model S, X, 3, Y and Energy Products. The Role The position is to support daily data analytics activities and process improvements suggestions based on fleet data and known field returns for all cell programs with more focus on Kato cell production build issues. Candidate is expected to lead or support quality focused multidisciplinary cell-related projects, typically involving R&D, Design or Production organization. The engineer must be extremely organized, detail orientated, with strong ability to prioritize and multitask, successfully collaborate on projects with a range of business objectives. This person must exhibit the knowledge, leadership, and drive needed to not only challenge the status quo, but also define and execute the optimal path forward. Responsibilities Perform extensive data study on all field failures and correlation studies with upstream cell manufacturing process. Create test models to ensure proper detection and outlier rejection criteria for field rejects, especially from Kato production. Identify trends from field return data and quantify reliability risks for diagnostics of key critical signals/metrics. Create data visualizations to communicate analysis results with cross-functional teams and drive decision making of key failure modes on field. Analyze Field Reliability/Quality data for cell related failures and failure modes to predict expected failure rates, affected populations, verify effectiveness of the corrective actions at Tesla and at suppliers. Provide data integration and setup quality systems for new in-house manufacturing lines and mass production cell models. Produce cogent and intelligible data visualizations, author technical presentations and summarize high-impact technical findings with strong data analysis package.
