In this role, you will assist in the design, implementation, and validation of new chassis control software features (e.g., autonomous driving/braking), ensuring they meet Tesla’s high standards for safety and customer experience. As an intern, you will gain a deep understanding of software-hardware dependencies and learn how to communicate technical constraints and risks to guide vehicle programs. You will apply systems engineering principles under the guidance of senior engineers to support safety-critical software development. Depending on the project needs, you may wear multiple hats, ranging from fleet data analysis to hands-on coding and prototyping. You will work in a fast-paced environment to help track program milestones and deliverables, collaborating with various teams to contribute to a cohesive final product. You will dive into the details—exploring source code, assisting with root cause analysis, proposing solutions to complex problems, and testing prototype firmware in vehicles at proving grounds around the world. Responsibilities Collaborate with design and development engineers to understand system requirements, interfaces, and interactions for specific vehicle functions. Assist in developing validation strategies and work with validation teams to ensure test coverage and traceability. Work cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, system architecture, firmware development, and validation teams to understand component-level hardware changes and support firmware integration for manufacturing and customer use. Develop and execute firmware integration test plans for new hardware components and features to help retire risks and provide feedback to development teams. Support manufacturing and service teams in ensuring functions are rolled out properly, which may include helping with diagnostic tools and root-cause diagnosis for product issues. Design and build prototype test setups to integrate new subsystems with simulated and actual vehicle components. Participate in functional safety analysis of complex software systems. Assist in developing safety concepts and support activities such as HARA and DFMEAs under the guidance of senior engineers.

The Role The Factory Firmware Team is focused on vehicle software and integration engineering in support of manufacturing and new product introduction. This will include projects to create or improve integration tools, as well as tasks to investigate vehicle software improvements in the manufacturing environment. It is important that this person is excited about learning new skills and systems and has strong collaboration skills. This person will be expected to move projects along at an aggressive pace and to get your hands dirty in the details of various subsystems – digging through backend logs, root causing issues and developing solutions to complex problems. The Factory Firmware Team is the eyes and ears of the Firmware organization within the factory and often have the last say on the deployment of new firmware to manufacturing – providing valuable insight and feedback to accelerate development of new software features.
