What to Expect
Thermal R&D is responsible for system level thermal architecture (including radiators, refrigerant heat exchangers, compressors, fans, pumps, etc.) supporting the cabin, battery, and powertrain across all Tesla vehicles. We are seeking technically qualified and highly motivated engineers in the field of Thermal Engineering as applied to automotive Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration. Qualified individual will collaborate with a cross-functional team of engineers to deliver innovative, best in class thermal components and systems with optimum efficiency, performance, reliability, and safety.

• Product thermal design and thermal/mechanical definition for next generation products. • Manage the development, specifications, design and manufacturing for your thermal solutions, i.e. heat sinks, interface materials, structures, fan, acoustics, thermally related ergonomics, enclosures, etc. • Prepare early design concepts and drive product thermally related design trade-offs • Research new materials, processes, and technologies to meet product goals • Support manufactory side thermal related issues debug and drive for solution. • Work with global team from concept design to manufacture and quality issue.
1. Responsible for the development of power module electromagnetic and circuit models include Spice model, optimizing power module electrical design, chip selection, and solving difficult problems such as oscillation, current sharing, crosstalk, and circulation current; 2. Responsible for the thermal resistance simulation, flow resistance simulation and various working condition temperature simulations of the power module, and optimizing the thermal design of the power module, completing the development of the electrothermal coupling simulation model of the power module; 3. Leading the power module packaging process simulation such as warpage, thermal mechanical stress, mold flow simulation, optimizing power module design, tooling fixture solution and key process parameters; 4. Aim to find root cause for power module reliability issues using simulation method, and complete lifetime assessment model and DFR for power modules; 5. Leading the continuous optimization of the power module simulation platform, defining a fast, robust, and automated simulation workflow, improving model accuracy based on experimental results, and realizing product virtual design and digital engineering; 6. Responsible for tracking cutting-edge simulation theories and methods for power modules, and using AI and big data methods to accelerate power module design and process development.
Responsibilities and activities for this position include the following: • Serve as Apple’s in-region thermal expert by leveraging a thorough understanding of the system-level and module-level thermal design and validation requirements. Experience in passive device thermal design is preferred. • Collaborate with U.S.-based Senior Thermal Engineers on technology evaluation, design investigation and process development for new products. • Guide and execute thermal testing at OEM and suppliers factories; Complete data reduction/analysis and prepare test reports. • Establish and manage relationships with thermal suppliers to identify emerging technologies and collaborate with them on the development of new technologies to meet Apple’s product roadmap needs. • Take the leading role in suggesting or adopting ideas for improving productivity and quality of thermal components. • Provide in-region expertise for root cause and corrective action of system thermal failures and defective thermal parts/materials. • Train engineers at OEM and vendor factories to produce high quality products using well-defined specifications, advanced production processes and update-to-date validation tools and codes.
- Responsible for developing the quality plan, infrastructure and its implementation for new projects by working closely with Apple multi-functional teams and the suppliers. - Support for NPI build activities and also support in MP. - Applies quality and reliability concepts during our products development phase as well as in the mass production to put in place quality controls in the manufacturing process. - Thoroughly understands the design and manufacturing process as well as capabilities of various manufacturing processes used and designs appropriate testing/controls to guarantee output quality. - Works with equipment vendors to design metrology (measurement inspection) equipment, approves DFMs and applies metrology concepts in qualification and validation of equipment. - Uses statistical tools to make everyday decisions such as sample size calculations, distribution analysis, process capability, etc and move the program forward. - Closely collaborates with the multi-functional team in the product development phase to assess product risks and paths to mitigate them. - Participates in the development and implementation of Product Quality Plan (PQP). - Develops specific quality programs during development and qualification stages. - Reviews product design to ensure quality objectives are met. - Closely work with suppliers to meet the quality expectations. - Collaborate with the suppliers and Apple multi-functional team to help set up the IQC, IPQC, OQC and ORT processes for key parts. - Establishes discovery audit procedures and ensures performance to standards by Apple test personnel.
